Agartala: April 13:  The death of Tapas Nama Das, an outsourced employee of the Electricity Corporation, has led to unrest at GB Hospital in Agartala. Tapas had suffered critical injuries a few days ago after falling from a height while on duty. Despite receiving treatment at GB Hospital, he passed away on Saturday night.

His passing has triggered anger among his colleagues, who have accused the private company he worked for of failing to provide adequate assistance and showing negligence in addressing his treatment and compensation. Workers have raised concerns about the risks associated with their profession, highlighting the challenges of low salaries and insufficient support during accidents.

On Sunday morning, workers gathered outside the hospital premises, later staging a protest while escorting Tapas’s body to the morgue. The protest included blocking the road near the electricity department and expressing dissatisfaction with the handling of the incident. The situation escalated further when demonstrators confronted an official from the private company and reportedly assaulted him.

Tapas’s colleagues are demanding compensation for his family, permanent employment for outsourced workers, and a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the accident. Authorities have deployed a significant police presence at the electricity office to manage the situation.
