Agartala, May 26: Along with the rest of the parts of the nation, Tripura on Monday observed Nazrul Jayanti to commemorate the birth anniversary of the rebel poet Kazi Nazrul islam and also to honor his contributions to Bengali literature, music, and the freedom movement.

The state social welfare and social education minister Tinku Roy paid tribute to the statue of the rebel poet, emphasising the importance of the poet’s writings and humanist ideals for the current generation. The state level programme was organised by the Information and Cultural Affairs department.

Addressing the event on Monday, the minister said that the rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was a unique and ordinary poet and writer. His various poems, songs and articles inspired the patriotism of the youth to free the country from British oppression and exploitation, he added.

He said that poet Nazrul wanted to liberate the country by inspiring the youth through his sharp writing. His great thoughts and ideals are still relevant today, he said, adding that the national poet Kabi Guru Rabindranath Tagore often said that the more you know Kazi Nazrul Islam, the more our country’s culture will progress. Therefore, we have to convey Nazrul’s ideals to the new generation, he said.

The minister informed that the Information and Culture Department has taken initiatives to revive many endangered cultures of ethnic groups, which was not observed during the tenure of the previous government.

Secretary of the Information and Culture Department Dr. Pradeep Kumar Chakraborty, Acting President of West Tripura Zilla Parishad Bishwajit Shil, Mayor in Council of Agartala Municipal Corporation Himani Debbarma, Corporator Sukhmoy Saha, Vice Chairman of Tripura State Cultural Advisory Committee Subrata Chakraborty and Director of ICA department Bimbisar Bhattacharya among others were present in the event.
