Kailashahar, June 5: A Rohingya youth was detained by Unakoti district police on Wednesday night from Ward No. 5 of Dhaliyarkandi Panchayat under Gournagar block. The youth, identified as 22-year-old Nur Mustafa, was apprehended by Irani police for illegally residing in the area.

According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Jayanta Karmakar, Nur Mustafa is originally a resident of Myanmar. He had entered Bangladesh in 2012 along with his family and took refuge in Cox’s Bazar Camp No. 9. Later, in 2019, he entered India through the assistance of a broker and worked in Hyderabad for several years.

Recently, Mustafa was reportedly planning to cross back into Bangladesh with the help of a tout. Acting on a tip-off, Irani police launched a search operation and detained him from a residence in Dhaliyarkandi.

The house owner, identified as Abdul Wahid, was also detained for allegedly providing illegal shelter to the foreign national. Authorities are investigating whether he had any knowledge of Mustafa’s background and intended plans.

“A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and both the accused were produced before the court on Thursday,” SDPO Karmakar said.

Police are also probing the possible involvement of human trafficking networks and intermediaries facilitating the movement of Rohingya refugees across international borders. Security in the border areas has been tightened in view of rising concerns over illegal infiltration and cross-border movement.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the presence of undocumented foreign nationals in the state and the need for stronger surveillance and coordination among law enforcement agencies.
