Agartala/Udaipur, June 7, 2025: Tensions flared in parts of Tripura following alleged attempts of public cow slaughter during Eid al-Adha, triggering unrest between communities in several areas of the state. At least four persons were detained by police in the Gomati Para area under Udaipur subdivision for allegedly slaughtering a cow in full public view along the banks of the Gomati River.

According to police, open slaughtering of cattle is strictly prohibited. “Legal action is being taken against those who violated the guidelines,” said SDPO Udaipur Nirman Das, who led the team responding to the incident. Activists of the Hindu Jagaran Mancha had rushed to the site, claiming that the act defied clear directives issued by both the administration and Muslim religious leaders urging private, regulated animal sacrifices.

In a related incident, unrest erupted near the Bhuvaneshwari Temple in Udaipur after a mob allegedly ransacked the home of Bishu Kazi, a lorry driver and member of the only Muslim family in the predominantly Hindu village. A battery-operated rickshaw belonging to a visitor, Billal Hossain, was also vandalised. Locals accused the family of hurting religious sentiments by allegedly participating in or facilitating animal sacrifice near the temple.

Police responded quickly to prevent further escalation. Senior officer Kulwant Singh visited the area, met with both communities, and confirmed that additional forces had been deployed to maintain peace. “The situation is under control. We are acting as per law,” Singh said.

Meanwhile, in Agartala, police intercepted two goods vehicles transporting cows without proper documentation. The animals were allegedly intended for Eid sacrifices. While police cited regulatory violations, the owners claimed harassment.

Investigations into all incidents are ongoing. Authorities have urged calm and restraint across communities.
