Agartala: June 09: Congress youth leader Shahjahan Islam has sparked political unrest in Agartala after making offensive and personal remarks on social media targeting former Tripura Chief Minister and MP Biplab Kumar Deb, as well as current Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. He also criticized the state police administration. Following these comments, a group of miscreants allegedly attacked Shahjahan’s residence late Sunday night in the Shantipara Masjid Patti Road area, vandalizing property and threatening his family members.

The incident triggered tension in the locality. On receiving information, police rushed to the scene along with Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman and Tripura Pradesh Congress President Asish Kumar Saha. However, upon arrival, they were reportedly confronted by BJP Yuva Morcha workers. During the commotion, the Officer-in-Charge of East Agartala Police Station was allegedly assaulted while trying to protect the Congress leaders.

Following the altercation, BJP leaders filed an FIR against Shahjahan Islam at the East Agartala Police Station, accusing him of attempting to disrupt peace through derogatory remarks against state leadership and spreading communal discord.

Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman strongly condemned the attack, stating that the incident occurred right across from the Chief Minister’s residence, highlighting a breakdown of law and order in the state. He demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the attack on Shahjahan’s home.

On the other hand, the Bardowali Mandal President of the BJP Yuva Morcha stated that Shahjahan’s objectionable remarks on social media were aimed at disturbing communal harmony and provoking unrest. He justified the legal complaint lodged against the Congress leader, emphasizing the need for accountability.

The situation remains tense in the Shantipara area, with heightened police presence to prevent further escalation. Investigations are ongoing into both the assault on Shahjahan’s house and the social media controversy.
