Churaibari, June 11 – In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Churaibari police arrested a serving Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawan along with two others for attempting to smuggle ganja through the Gobindpur area in North Tripura district.

Acting on a tip-off about a planned consignment, a joint team of Churaibari police and TSR personnel laid an ambush near the Krishna Kali temple in Ward No. 2 of Gobindpur village late Tuesday night.

A luxury vehicle bearing registration number TR05F-0432 was intercepted while traveling along the Kadamtala-Gobindpur road. Upon searching the vehicle, police recovered four packets of dry ganja weighing approximately 20 kilograms. The market value of the seized contraband is estimated to be around Rs 2 lakh.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Ranjit Singh, Surajit Singh, and Shubhajit Singh—all residents of Ward No. 2, Gobindpur village. Among them, Ranjit Singh is currently serving as a jawan in the 12th Battalion of Tripura State Rifles and is posted at Chakmaghat, Teliamura.

Police have registered a case against the three under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the trafficking network and whether additional individuals may be involved.

Authorities have emphasized their zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking, regardless of the individuals’ affiliations. The arrest of a serving TSR jawan has raised serious concerns and highlights the need for internal checks within security forces.

Local law enforcement has vowed to intensify surveillance in known trafficking corridors to curb the illegal drug trade and ensure strict action against all offenders.
