Agartala, June 13: Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Friday inaugurated a state-of-the-art Cancer Care Center at a private run hospital in Agartala. The new center has been established in collaboration with the International Oncology Cancer Institute, aiming to make quality cancer treatment more accessible within the state.
Dr Saha highlighted the significant strides made in the state’s healthcare sector over the past seven years. He announced that a 100-bed Regional Tertiary Eye Hospital would soon be set up in Agartala, with budgetary allocation already in place for the project.
Dr. Saha emphasized that while cancer remains a serious disease, advancements in medical science have made early diagnosis and timely treatment more effective in combating the illness. He pointed out that public awareness plays a crucial role in cancer prevention, adding that habits like smoking and the consumption of tobacco and other intoxicants are among the primary causes of cancer.
Referring to the “Mukhyamantri Samipeshu” program, Dr. Saha noted that a large number of applicants seek financial assistance for medical treatment, especially cancer patients who often travel to private hospitals in Mumbai. To ease this burden, the state government has identified accommodation facilities in Mumbai for patients and their attendants.
The Chief Minister expressed optimism that the new cancer care unit, established through private initiative, will make cancer treatment more accessible within Tripura itself. He also praised the Hospital for contributing to both quality healthcare and local employment opportunities.
Dr. Saha further stated that the state-run Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Center (ABVRCC) continues to play a pivotal role in cancer treatment.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that around 400 students are currently pursuing MBBS courses in the state. He revealed that a team led by AIIMS Director Prof. (Dr.) M. Srinivas recently visited Tripura and recommended the establishment of a Hospital Management Department in the state. Notably, two successful kidney transplants have been performed at AGMC and GB Hospital, and preparations are underway for liver transplant surgeries.
Investors from other states have shown interest in investing in Tripura’s healthcare sector, further signaling the growth and potential of medical infrastructure in the state, he added.
