Agartala: May 20: The Government of Tripura has announced a 16% increase in the daily wages of tea garden workers in the state. As per the new structure, wages for adult workers will rise from ₹176 to ₹204, while wages for minor workers will increase from ₹88 to ₹102.
The announcement was made by Minister Tinku Roy at a press conference. He noted that the last revision in minimum wages for tea garden workers took place in January 2018, when adult wages were raised from ₹105 to ₹176 and minor wages from ₹52.50 to ₹88.
In light of recent demands for a wage revision, the state government constituted a 10-member committee in this regard, chaired by MLA Swapna Das Paul of the 46-Surma Assembly Constituency. The committee was tasked with evaluating all relevant aspects and recommending a revised wage structure. It also reviewed existing job categories within the sector.
A discussion meeting was convened on 28 May, chaired by Das Paul and attended by key stakeholders, including Sameer Ranjan Ghosh, Chairman of Tripura Tea Development Corporation Ltd; Sanjay Bagchi, Secretary of the Surma Valley Branch of the Indian Tea Association, Silchar; and Jaydeb Sarkar, President of K.K. Nagar T.S.S.S. Ltd.
Following these deliberations, the committee recommended a 16% increase in minimum wages, which was subsequently approved by the state government.
