Agartala, June 24: On the occasion of Balidan Diwas, the Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) paid solemn tribute to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, honouring his legacy as a staunch nationalist and visionary educationist.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha led the commemoration by offering floral tributes to Dr. Mookerjee’s portrait at the BJP State Headquarters in Agartala. Addressing party workers and dignitaries, Dr. Saha praised Dr. Mookerjee’s dedication to national unity and recalled his early accomplishments, including becoming one of the youngest Vice Chancellors of Calcutta University.

“Dr. Mookerjee left the world of academics to serve the nation during one of its most difficult periods—the partition. His leadership played a key role in ensuring parts of Punjab and Bengal remained in India,” said the Chief Minister.

Dr. Saha also highlighted Dr. Mookerjee’s resolute opposition to Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. “He resigned from Prime Minister Nehru’s cabinet and launched a Satyagraha with the powerful slogan—’Ek Desh Mein Do Nishan, Do Vidhan, Do Pradhan – Nahi Chalenge’. His arrest and untimely death while imprisoned in Srinagar became a turning point in India’s political journey,” he said.

The Chief Minister credited the BJP’s long struggle under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for fulfilling Dr. Mookerjee’s vision through the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

BJP State President Rajib Bhattacharjee announced state-wide activities to honour Dr. Mookerjee’s sacrifice. As part of the observance, the BJP launched the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, encouraging people to plant trees in their mothers’ names as a tribute to motherhood and ecological responsibility.

Ministers Tinku Roy, Sushanta Chowdhury, Sudhangshu Das, AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder, and senior BJP leaders also participated in the programme.
