Agartala, June 23: Literacy in India is no longer confined to the mere ability to sign one’s name—it now encompasses functional knowledge in basic mathematics, banking, and digital skills, said Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Monday.
Dr Saha attended the official announcement of Tripura being declared as India’s 3rd fully literate state programme here at Agartala Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan on Monday morning.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Saha said that keeping pace with global standards, India continues to advance toward meaningful and effective literacy.
At a significant milestone in this journey, Tripura has been officially declared the 3rd ‘Fully Literate State’ in the country. The announcement was made today during a celebratory event organized by the School Education Department at Rabindra Bhawan.
Dr Saha said that in 1961, Tripura’s literacy rate stood at just 20.24%. Today, it has transformed into 95.6% effective literacy, as recorded in the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS). This achievement was made possible under the Ullas–Nav Bharat Saksharta Karyakram (NILP) through the relentless efforts of 943 Social Awareness Centres and 2,228 dedicated volunteers of the Youth Literacy Corps, he added.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Saha congratulated and encouraged the newly literate individuals and acknowledged the tireless work of everyone involved in making this historic transformation a reality.
