Agartala, June 24: Former Chief Minister and CPI(M) Politburo member Manik Sarkar on Monday alleged that the ruling party has adopted a path of terror to suppress people’s democratic rights. His comments came after he visited the residence of CPI(M) leader Badal Das in Alanganagar, Barjala, which was allegedly attacked by miscreants linked to the ruling BJP.
Speaking to the media, Sarkar said the incident took place following the local conference of the CPI(M)-affiliated Agricultural Labour Union, which was peacefully held at Badal Das’s residence on Sunday. However, as night fell, the situation reportedly turned violent.
According to Sarkar, a group of miscreants allegedly associated with the BJP launched a premeditated attack on Das’s house, vandalizing the boundary walls and furniture. Family members were also reportedly injured during the assault.
Accompanied by CPI(M) leader Ratan Das and former MP Shankar Prasad Dutta, Sarkar condemned the incident as a “cowardly act” and criticized the ruling party for using violence as a tool to silence opposition voices and curtail democratic freedoms.
He further stated that such incidents are contributing to a rise in political unrest in the state. The CPI(M) has already called for mass protests in response.
Meanwhile, the local administration has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the incident. However, additional police forces have been deployed in the area, and authorities have assured that an investigation is underway.
Residents and opposition leaders have demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and strict legal action to ensure justice.
