Agartala, June 29, 2025: Tripura on Sunday joined the rest of the nation in celebrating Statistics Day 2025, honoring the legacy of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, regarded as the father of modern statistics in India.
A commemorative program was organized at Hall No. 3 of Pragya Bhavan, where Minister for Statistics Bikas Debbarma addressed the gathering.
This year, the central theme for Statistics Day was “75 Years of National Sample Survey”, marking the significant contributions of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) in data collection and policy planning in India.
Minister Bikas Debbarma paid tribute to Mahalanobis, recognizing his role as a visionary statistician, scientist, economist, and the founder of the Indian Statistical Institute. “Statistics is one of the essential tools in mapping the path of development.
“Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our department officials, we are able to access reliable data about Tripura, which helps in formulating effective development policies,” said the minister.
He also expressed pride that Tripura’s achievements in statistical data collection have earned praise in national forums. “During a recent meeting in Delhi, representatives from other states showed interest in learning about our department’s practices, which is a matter of great pride for us,” he stated.
To mark the occasion, seven new publications were officially launched, along with the digital release of the book ‘Econometrics of Change’. The minister emphasized that accurate data serves as the backbone for assessing employment, healthcare, and socio-economic standards in the state. He concluded his speech by encouraging all institutions and offices to participate in the environmental campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ by planting trees.
The seven newly unveiled publications included Coffee Table Book, District Domestic Product Report, Tripura Import-Export Statistics, Environmental Statistics: Sankalp-Tripura, Urban Local Body Accounts: Tripura, Meat and Meat Product Survey: Tripura and Q2 Economic Indicators.
