Agartala: July 17: A Tripura State Rifles (TSR) trooper, identified as Mithun Das, sustained serious injuries during escort duty for former Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik after a motorcade vehicle was involved in a road accident near Melaghar on Thursday morning.
According to police sources, the incident occurred amidst heavy rain as the Minister was en route to Jatrapur. A head-on collision took place between a vehicle from the Minister’s convoy and a private car traveling towards Bishramganja. The crash happened at a sharp curve on the road, reducing visibility due to the weather.
Melaghar Police Station’s Second Officer-in-Charge, Uttam Paul, stated, “The private vehicle involved in the accident belonged to a police constable who was reportedly heading to Bishramganja for a personal errand.”
TSR jawan Mithun Das was critically injured and was immediately shifted to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala for advanced medical treatment. Several other TSR personnel in the convoy sustained minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital before being discharged.
The police confirmed that both vehicles involved in the crash have been impounded. “No arrests have been made as of now. We are waiting for any formal complaints, and further legal action will be taken accordingly,” added Paul.
The incident has raised concerns about road safety and the challenges of driving in poor weather conditions, especially on sharp turns. Authorities are expected to review convoy safety protocols and road conditions in the area to prevent future mishaps.
