New Delhi, August 3:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday held separate meetings with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, a day before the Monsoon Session of Parliament resumes.
The Rashtrapati Bhavan, sharing updates on X, posted, “Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan,” along with photographs of their meeting. Another post confirmed that Amit Shah also met the President later in the day.
While the agenda of the discussions was not officially disclosed, the meetings took place against the backdrop of escalating tensions in Parliament over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections in the state.
The meetings also follow Prime Minister Modi’s remarks in Varanasi on Saturday, where he emphasized the government’s focus on the welfare of farmers, small industries, and youth, even as India faces fresh economic challenges from US-imposed tariffs. US President Donald Trump recently announced a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, effective August 7, along with additional penalties linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil.
Addressing the global economic situation, Modi stated, “There is an atmosphere of global instability. All countries are prioritizing their individual interests. India is on its way to becoming the world’s third-largest economy. We must stay vigilant about our economic interests and promote the use of swadeshi products.”
The Monsoon Session, which began on July 21, has witnessed frequent disruptions and heated exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches, leaving little room for legislative business.
The back-to-back meetings with the President are being viewed as part of the government’s preparations ahead of a crucial week in Parliament.
