Agartala: Sept 01: Jatrapur Police have scored a major success in their anti-cannabis drive, acting on confidential intelligence that led to two significant recoveries within hours.

On Monday morning, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Siti Kantha Bardhan reported that on the evening of August 31, police recovered two packets containing 8 kilograms of dried cannabis from a rubber plantation in Nirbhaypur, a border village under the local panchayat. While no arrests were made at the scene, investigations are ongoing to trace the owner of the contraband.

In a separate operation carried out at dawn, police discovered several cannabis nursery plots hidden in the forested area south of the Kakri River, which runs through South Maheshpur. The location falls under the Forest Department’s protected zone. Acting swiftly, a large police team reached the area and destroyed the illegal cultivation.

According to OC Bardhan, an estimated 200,000 cannabis saplings were growing across eight separate plots. “The operation was conducted in strict adherence to directives from the Home Department. Despite the challenging terrain, our team executed the destruction successfully and without incident,” he said.

Police officials emphasized that such operations will continue with equal intensity in the future as part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal cannabis cultivation and trade along the border areas. The twin discoveries have dealt a significant blow to the supply chain of contraband in the region, reinforcing law enforcement’s commitment to eradicating the menace.

The successful operation highlights the importance of timely intelligence gathering and coordinated field action, particularly in remote and forested areas where illicit cultivation often thrives. Authorities have assured that surveillance will be tightened to prevent re-establishment of such illegal nurseries.
