Agartala, Sep 01: Despite the state and central government’s continuous push for infrastructure development, negligence by certain contracting agencies is causing serious setbacks to public projects in Tripura. A glaring example is the 1-kilometer stretch of road from Ampi Chowmuhani to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital, which has been lying in a dilapidated condition for a long time.
The road, crucial for daily commuters, patients, and emergency ambulance services, remains unrepaired despite being handed over to NHIDCL. Locals alleged that the agency has been delaying the work without any valid reason, worsening the suffering of the people.
On Monday, Teliamura MLA and Chief Whip of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Kalyani Saha Roy, inspected the road along with Municipal Council Chairman Rupak Sarkar, SDM Abhedananda Baidya, NHIDCL officials, and other administrative officers. During the inspection, she expressed strong dissatisfaction over the delay and directed the officials to immediately begin repair work.
The MLA stated that she had repeatedly urged the company to start the project, but no effective steps were taken. She warned that if work does not start soon, she may be forced to launch a road blockade and even resort to extreme steps in the interest of the people. She also informed that she had already raised the matter with Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha.
Later in the day, following the controversy, it was reported that a high-level meeting chaired by the PWD Secretary, Kiran Gitte, would be held in Agartala with NHIDCL officials to review the issue.
This incident once again highlights that while the government’s intent and efforts toward development are clear, lapses by irresponsible contractors are pushing common people into unnecessary hardship.
