Agartala, Sep 12: The Neermahal Water Festival is a reflection of the daily life and livelihood of the people living around Rudrasagar Lake, said Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman at the festival’s inauguration on Friday. He emphasized that Neermahal is not just a royal architectural monument, but a significant carrier of Tripura’s history and cultural heritage. The palace and the lake have played an important role in improving the economic and social well-being of the local population.
The three-day traditional festival, organized at Rajghat in Melaghar, is a joint initiative of the Tripura Tourism Development Corporation, Department of Information & Culture, Sepahijala District Council, Melaghar Municipal Council, and the Sepahijala District Administration.
During his speech, Minister Barman highlighted the close connection between Neermahal and the Scheduled Tribe communities residing in the Rudrasagar area. He further remarked that the festival’s purpose goes beyond promoting tourism—it also plays a vital role in preserving and fostering the cultural heritage of the local people. The Minister wished for the success of the Neermahal Water Festival.
Other dignitaries at the inaugural ceremony included Sepahijala District Council’s Assistant Chairman Pintu Aich and noted social worker Uttam Das. The welcome address was delivered by Managing Director of Tripura Tourism Development Corporation, Prashanta Badal Negi. The event was chaired by Anamika Ghosh Pal Roy, Chairperson of the Melaghar Municipal Council. Among the guests were MDC Padmalochan Tripura, Vice Chairperson of Melaghar Municipal Council Gurupada Roy, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Sonamura Raju Deb, Secretary of Rudrasagar Refugee Fishermen’s Cooperative Society Parameshwar Das, and Additional Director of the Department of Information & Culture Panchali Debbarma.
The ceremony also featured a cultural performance by local artists.
