Agartala: The importance of bamboo in Tripura’s economy is steadily growing, with immense potential for boosting the state’s development. Speaking at a program organized on the occasion of World Bamboo Day at Pragya Bhavan, Industry and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma highlighted that bamboo and cane-based industries are creating new opportunities for women to achieve economic self-reliance.

The program was organized by the Tripura Bamboo Mission, where the Minister emphasized the need for collective efforts to drive the state towards holistic development. Referring to the Prime Minister’s “Vocal for Local” initiative, she urged people to support local products and contribute to making Tripura economically self-sufficient.

Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, addressing the event, underlined the wide-ranging importance of bamboo, noting its increasing use in furniture and other sectors. He said that bamboo-based products from Tripura are being appreciated across the country, and effective use of this resource can significantly strengthen the state’s economy.

Minister of State for Industry and Commerce, Brishaketu Debbarma, added that bamboo holds cultural and economic significance for tribal communities. He pointed out that many families earn their livelihood by exporting incense stick sticks (dhupkathi shola) to other states.

PCCF Praveen Agarwal, Mission Director of Tripura Bamboo Mission Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, Director of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department Phanibhushan Jamatia, along with senior officials were present.

On the occasion, several bamboo cultivators and artisans of the state were provided with toolkits, and a number of bamboo entrepreneurs were felicitated for their contributions.
