Renowned Assamese singer and music icon Zubeen Garg tragically passed away following a scuba diving accident in Singapore. The 52-year-old artist, who had a massive fan base across Assam and India, was in Singapore to attend the 4th North East India Festival, where he was scheduled to perform as the Cultural Brand Ambassador.
According to reports, Garg encountered severe breathing difficulties while scuba diving in the waters near Singapore. He was promptly rescued by local authorities and rushed to a nearby hospital by the Singapore police. Upon arrival, he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where a team of doctors provided continuous medical attention in an attempt to stabilize his condition.
Despite all efforts, Zubeen succumbed to complications arising from the incident, leaving fans and the entire Indian music community in deep shock and mourning.
Zubeen Garg, best known nationally for his hit Bollywood song “Ya Ali” from the 2006 film Gangster, was a cultural icon in Assam and the North East. His music spanned multiple languages, including Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and several regional dialects. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he composed, sang, and acted in hundreds of projects, becoming a household name and a symbol of Assamese pride.
News of his untimely death has triggered an outpouring of grief. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his condolences, calling Garg “a true son of the soil” and a “voice of the people.” Tributes have also poured in from fellow artists, fans, and political leaders nationwide.
