Agartala, Sept 19: Tourism will play a pivotal role in creating employment opportunities and strengthening the economic foundation of Tripura in the coming days, said Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury while participating in a discussion in the Assembly on Friday.
The discussion took place on a private member’s resolution moved by MLA Deepak Majumder, which proposed that the state government should take up special projects for the development of infrastructure in traditional and natural tourist destinations. The proposal was unanimously passed in the House.
Highlighting government initiatives, Minister Chowdhury said that special focus has been given to the development of Unakoti as a major tourist destination. He informed that a project worth ₹72 crore is underway at Sonamukhi near Unakoti to build modern tourism infrastructure. The state has also modernized Narikelkunj, where new log huts have been constructed for tourists. At Chottakhola’s Maitri Udyan, facilities such as rest houses, eateries, and toilets have been developed, which were absent earlier. Several tourist lodges across the state have also been upgraded.
The Minister added that tourism-related livelihood projects are being implemented to make local youth self-reliant. With better infrastructure, more tourists from outside the state will be attracted, further boosting Tripura’s economy.
While tabling the resolution, MLA Deepak Majumder emphasized the vast potential of tourism in Tripura and noted that the state government has given special attention to the sector. He highlighted that under the “Swadesh Darshan” scheme, several tourist spots are being developed and tourist lodges have been modernized. Tourist inflow in the state has already seen significant growth, he added.
Participating in the discussion, MLAs Birajit Sinha, Shailendra Chandra Nath, and Dipankar Sen also spoke in favor of the resolution. After deliberation, the proposal was adopted unanimously.
