Agartala, September 25: The Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) has lodged a strong protest against alleged forcible collection of Durga Puja subscriptions from students in Agartala. A delegation of TSF leaders submitted a deputation to Additional SP Dhruba Nath on Thursday, demanding immediate administrative intervention.

According to the student body, many students from different parts of Tripura, who reside in Agartala for higher studies, are being compelled by various puja clubs and committees to pay hefty amounts in the name of Durga Puja subscriptions. Since most of these students belong to ordinary or lower-income families, such demands are creating both financial hardship and mental stress.

The TSF clarified that it fully respects the religious and cultural significance of Durga Puja but strongly opposes coercion in collecting contributions. “Donations should be entirely voluntary — even if someone wishes to contribute only ₹10, no one should object,” the organisation stated.

The students’ body also pointed out that Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha himself had publicly announced that no club or organisation can force anyone to pay puja subscription. Yet, the practice continues in many areas, which TSF termed “deeply concerning.”

The organisation urged the administration to take strict action to stop such collections immediately. They demanded that clear instructions be issued to police stations and relevant authorities to ensure the Chief Minister’s directive is enforced, thereby protecting students’ right to voluntary contribution.
