Ottawa, Sep 29 — The Canadian government on Monday officially listed the Bishnoi gang, led by notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, as a terrorist organisation, citing its involvement in murder, shootings, arson, and creating fear through extortion and intimidation.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, announcing the move, said: “Acts of violence and terror have no place in Canada, especially those targeting specific communities to create fear and intimidation. By listing the Bishnoi Gang under the Criminal Code, we are taking decisive action to protect Canadians.”

The designation gives law enforcement broad powers, including freezing or seizing property, vehicles, and funds linked to the gang. It also makes it a criminal offence for anyone in Canada or abroad to knowingly deal with assets owned or controlled by the group. Providing funds, property, or other benefits directly or indirectly to the gang will also be punishable under the law.

According to the Ministry of Public Safety, the listing strengthens the ability of Canadian security, intelligence, and border agencies to block recruitment, financing, and travel linked to the group. It will also inform immigration and refugee protection decisions by deeming the gang a serious security threat.

The Bishnoi gang, described as a transnational criminal network operating primarily out of India, is said to maintain a presence in Canada, particularly in areas with significant diaspora populations. Authorities allege it spreads terror by targeting community leaders, businesses, and cultural figures through violence and intimidation.

Minister Anandasangaree emphasised that the decision underscores Ottawa’s commitment to keeping all Canadians safe. “Every person has the right to feel secure in their home and community. This listing gives us more effective tools to stop the Bishnoi Gang’s criminal terrorism and protect our people,” he said.
