Srinagar, Oct 1: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference MP Mian Altaf Ahmad, who represents the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha constituency, met the Chief Engineer of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in Srinagar on Wednesday to review the progress on the Mughal Road tunnel project.

The Mughal Road, which links Kashmir Valley with Poonch district in the Jammu division, often remains closed during winters and landslides, causing hardships to commuters and traders. To address this, the Central government approved the construction of a tunnel at an estimated cost of Rs 3,830 crore, making the road an all-weather alternative to the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44). The project has been entrusted to the BRO.

During the meeting, the Chief Engineer of BRO Kashmir informed Mian Altaf that the tunnel project was progressing steadily and “moving in the right direction.” However, the MP urged the BRO to accelerate efforts, stressing the immense public importance of the tunnel.

“The Mughal Road tunnel will not only provide a reliable alternative to the Jammu-Srinagar Highway, which frequently remains shut due to landslides, but will also enhance connectivity, boost trade, and promote tourism,” Mian Altaf said.

He underlined that the tunnel would be particularly beneficial for apple growers and traders, as it would reduce transportation delays, post-harvest losses, and heavy dependence on the often-blocked NH-44.

In addition to reviewing the tunnel work, the MP also requested the BRO to upgrade and expedite maintenance of the Shopian–Peer ki Galli road, which is a crucial link for smooth travel.

Officials said the Mughal Road tunnel, once completed, will serve as a strategic and economic lifeline, offering year-round connectivity between the two regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
