Agartala, Oct 7: Tension flared in Agartala on Tuesday when a section of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters allegedly attacked the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) state headquarters during a protest march. The rally had been organised by the BJP Tripura Pradesh unit to express solidarity with party workers in West Bengal following alleged attacks on BJP MPs and MLAs there.

According to reports, the BJP’s protest procession, led by state leaders and members of the Yuva Morcha, began peacefully but turned chaotic when a group of participants broke away upon reaching the Motor Stand area and vandalised parts of the Trinamool office. BJP Sadar Urban District President Ashim Bhattacharjee and BJYM state president and MLA Sushanta Deb quickly intervened to restore order. Except for minor damage to a few flexes and flower tubs, no major destruction was reported.

Condemning the political situation in West Bengal, Bhattacharjee told the media that the state, once known as the land of scholars and revolutionaries, has “turned into a corridor for destruction under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership.” He alleged that recent attacks on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh reflected Trinamool’s growing insecurity. “The TMC has lost people’s confidence and fears the rise of the BJP,” he added.

Reacting strongly, the AITC accused the BJP of resorting to violence to stifle opposition voices. “The violent attack on @AITC4Tripura’s office by BJP-backed goons is not an isolated act of aggression but an open assault on democracy,” read a statement on the party’s official X handle.

The post added that while offices may be damaged and workers intimidated, “the spirit of resistance cannot be destroyed.” The AITC vowed not to be silenced, asserting that “the people of Tripura and India are watching.”
