Udaipur/Agartala, Oct 15 — Tripura’s tourism sector has entered a new phase of rapid growth, marked by the unveiling of several major projects and a significant rise in both domestic and foreign tourist arrivals over the past year, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said at the National Conference of State Tourism Ministers in Udaipur.

Addressing the second day of the two-day national conference, Chowdhury highlighted Tripura’s emerging status as a preferred tourist destination, attributing the progress to improved governance, infrastructure development, and the state’s unique geographical advantage — being surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides.

“In earlier regimes, the tourism sector was neglected. Under the present government, guided by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Tripura is reawakening as a tourism hub,” he said while addressing ministers and officials from across the country.

The minister revealed that the state recorded a 64.07 per cent increase in domestic tourist arrivals and a 36.15 per cent rise in foreign tourist footfall during 2023–24, reflecting growing interest in Tripura’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and eco-tourism potential.

According to data from the Ministry of Tourism, Tripura now ranks among the leading northeastern states in terms of foreign tourist arrivals — a milestone that underscores the state’s expanding global visibility.

Chowdhury emphasized that the government’s focus extends beyond promoting tourism to developing integrated infrastructure such as improved connectivity, upgraded facilities, and community-based tourism initiatives. He urged the Union Ministry of Tourism to continue its support for Tripura’s efforts to build a sustainable and inclusive tourism ecosystem.

“Tripura’s transformation is a reflection of the government’s dedication to harnessing the state’s cultural richness and natural diversity for economic growth and employment generation,” the minister added.
