Agartala, Oct 15 — A violent clash along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Khowai district left three unidentified Bangladeshi cattle lifters dead and two Indian villagers injured on Wednesday, officials said.

According to police, the incident occurred near the Bidyabil area under Champahowar police station when two villagers had gone to work in a rubber plantation close to the international border. The duo reportedly spotted three men from Bangladesh hiding in the plantation. When challenged, the intruders allegedly attacked the villagers with daos, sharp-edged weapons, causing injuries to both.

After returning to the village to inform others, a group of local residents rushed to the border area, confronted the intruders, and in the ensuing altercation, allegedly hacked all three to death. The two injured villagers are currently receiving treatment at Behelabari Government Hospital.

A police team, along with forensic experts, reached the site, recovered the bodies, and sent them to Khowai District Hospital for post-mortem examination. Senior officials visited the area, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing. Authorities stated that the situation is currently under control.

In a separate development, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, in coordination with Tripura Police, conducted a raid in the Karamtila border area of South Tripura on Tuesday, recovering a consignment of clothes worth Rs 8 lakh. Additionally, alert BSF teams foiled multiple smuggling attempts along the 856-km-long India-Bangladesh border, rescuing cattle and seizing contraband worth Rs 5 lakh.

Tripura, surrounded on three sides by Bangladesh, remains highly vulnerable to cross-border crimes, including smuggling and illegal cattle trade. While most of the frontier has been fenced to curb illegal activities and infiltration, authorities continue to remain vigilant to maintain security and prevent further incidents.
