Dharmanagar, December 6:
Public anger has intensified in Dharmanagar after allegations surfaced on social media claiming that V-Mart was selling expired food products. The complaint, posted by a local shopper, quickly went viral, prompting widespread concern over consumer safety and triggering a swift response from authorities.

In reaction to the uproar, a special inspection team led by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s (SDM) office conducted a surprise raid at V-Mart on Friday. The operation included officials from the Dharmanagar Municipal Council (DMC), police, Sales Tax Department, Food Safety Office, Tripura State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB), Legal Metrology Department, and the SDM’s Food Section.

During the inspection, officials thoroughly examined expiry dates, storage conditions, packaging, and product handling practices. According to authorities, several expired food packets were seized on the spot, confirming the seriousness of the allegations.

The viral complaint sparked intense discussion among residents, many of whom questioned the absence of regular monitoring in large retail chains. Citizens expressed concern that negligence in quality control could pose serious health risks, especially when high footfall stores fail to comply with basic safety norms.

Authorities assured strict action, stating, “No irregularities will be tolerated. Surveillance will be intensified to safeguard consumers.” In line with this commitment, the crackdown extended beyond V-Mart.

Teams conducted surprise inspections at Vishal Mega Mart, Smart Point, Noyapara Bazaar, and several other outlets across the town. Inspectors checked billing systems, Maximum Retail Price (MRP) compliance, stock registers, weighing machines, environmental safety standards, and overall food quality protocols.

Residents are now demanding that monitoring efforts encompass not only large shopping centres but also small shops and local markets where oversight is often minimal.

The administration has pledged to continue these drives, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring that consumers in Dharmanagar have access to safe, authentic, and high-quality products.
