Agartala Mayor and Chairman of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), Dipak Majumder, on Monday announced plans to organise a three-day Swadeshi Fair at Swami Vivekananda Maidan with the aim of showcasing and promoting locally manufactured products of Tripura. The proposed fair is tentatively scheduled to be held from January 9 to January 11, 2026, subject to approval from the state government.

Speaking after a preparatory meeting held at the AMC conference hall, Majumder said a formal proposal would soon be submitted to the state government. Once approved, the fair will be organised at the proposed venue on the scheduled dates. He informed that Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha will be invited to inaugurate the event in the presence of cabinet ministers, chairpersons of public sector enterprises, MLAs, and other elected representatives.

The preparatory meeting was attended by senior officials from various state departments, including the District Magistrate of West Tripura, highlighting the coordinated approach being taken to ensure the success of the event. Majumder said the fair draws inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Atma Nirbhar Bharat and Atma Nirbhar Tripura. “Through this fair, we want to showcase what we are capable of producing ourselves and encourage people to rely on locally made goods,” he said.

A major highlight of the Swadeshi Fair will be the participation of Self-Help Group (SHG) members, who will display and sell their products. In addition, several state government departments have been invited to set up stalls to exhibit locally developed initiatives and products. According to a preliminary estimate, around 60 to 65 stalls will be installed during the fair.

The event will also feature cultural programmes throughout the three days, with performances scheduled every evening to attract visitors and create a festive atmosphere. Majumder added that the fair will commemorate the historic Swadeshi Movement of 1905. Important events and milestones associated with the movement will be displayed to inspire people to adopt and support indigenous production, reinforcing the spirit of self-reliance among citizens.
