In a major step towards strengthening weather monitoring and disaster preparedness, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the installation of a high-capacity Doppler Weather Radar in South Tripura. The advanced system is expected to significantly enhance the region’s ability to monitor weather patterns and issue timely early warnings.

The Doppler Weather Radar will be set up at Sarasima in the Belonia sub-division of South Tripura district, on the premises of the under-construction District Magistrate’s Office. With a wide coverage radius of up to 100 kilometres, the radar will play a crucial role in the early detection and accurate forecasting of various weather phenomena affecting South Tripura and nearby areas.

The development was announced during a press conference held on Tuesday at the conference hall of the South Tripura District Magistrate’s Office. District Magistrate Mohammad Sajjad P informed that the radar installation will cover an area of approximately 0.22 acres within the administrative complex.

Highlighting the importance of the project, the District Magistrate said the Doppler Weather Radar would provide advance alerts related to rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, storms, and cyclones. These real-time inputs will greatly improve the district administration’s capacity to respond effectively to extreme weather events.

He further emphasized that timely and accurate weather warnings would help minimize the risk to life and property, particularly during the monsoon season and periods of severe weather. The radar data will also assist disaster management authorities in planning evacuations, managing relief operations, and coordinating emergency responses more efficiently.

Scientist Partha Roy from the Agartala unit of the India Meteorological Department was also present at the press conference and shared technical insights into the functioning and benefits of the Doppler Weather Radar system. He noted that such installations are critical for improving localized weather forecasting accuracy in vulnerable regions.

The installation of the Doppler Weather Radar is being viewed as a significant upgrade to the meteorological infrastructure of South Tripura. Once operational, it is expected to benefit not only the district but also adjoining areas by strengthening early warning mechanisms and enhancing overall disaster resilience in the region.
