Bangladesh’s first female prime minister and veteran political leader Khaleda Zia has died at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness, her party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), confirmed on Tuesday. Her death marks the end of a defining chapter in the country’s political history, spanning decades of leadership, rivalry, and influence.

Khaleda Zia had been suffering from multiple age-related and chronic health conditions for several years. According to her doctors, she was battling advanced liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, as well as chest and heart complications. Her health had deteriorated significantly in recent months, leading to extended hospitalisation and constant medical supervision.

Born in 1945, Khaleda Zia rose to prominence following the assassination of her husband, former President Ziaur Rahman, in 1981. She later took over the leadership of the BNP and emerged as one of the most powerful figures in Bangladesh’s politics. In 1991, she made history by becoming the country’s first woman prime minister, a landmark moment for women’s political representation in South Asia.

Khaleda Zia served multiple terms as prime minister and played a central role in shaping Bangladesh’s democratic journey. Her political career was defined by a long and intense rivalry with Sheikh Hasina, leader of the Awami League and another former prime minister. The rivalry between the two women dominated the nation’s politics for decades, often deeply polarising the electorate.

Despite facing legal and political challenges later in life, Khaleda Zia remained a symbol of opposition politics and commanded strong loyalty among her supporters. Her passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from party members, political leaders, and citizens across the country.

As Bangladesh mourns her death, Khaleda Zia is remembered as a trailblazer, a resilient leader, and a central figure in the nation’s modern political history. Her legacy is expected to continue shaping political discourse for years to come.
