Agartala, January 3:
A delegation of the North East Youth Congress Coordination Committee visited the ancestral home of the late Anjel Chakma on Saturday to pay homage and express solidarity with his grieving family. The delegation strongly condemned the killing and demanded stringent legal measures to curb racial discrimination and violence in the country.

The delegation was led by Tarh Jhony, National General Secretary of the Youth Congress and Convenor of the North East Youth Congress Coordination Committee. During the visit, Jhony said the purpose was to stand beside the family in their moment of grief and assure them of unwavering support from the people of the North East.

“Our visit is meant to convey a clear message to Anjel Chakma’s parents and family that they are not alone. The entire North East stands united with them in this painful time,” Jhony said.

He emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive and effective law to prevent incidents of racial discrimination and targeted violence, especially against youths from the North East who live and work outside the region. Jhony also stated that senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had personally instructed the Youth Congress leadership to visit the bereaved family, pay tribute to Anjel Chakma, and convey the party’s condolences.

The National President of the Indian Youth Congress, Uday Bhanu Chib, spoke with the family through a video call, offering condolences and praying for the eternal peace of Anjel Chakma’s soul.

Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress President Neel Kamal Saha, who was also part of the delegation, described the incident as deeply shocking and disturbing. He alleged that Anjel Chakma was killed in Dehradun solely because of his physical appearance, despite repeatedly stating that he was an Indian citizen.

“Even after identifying himself as an Indian, he was brutally attacked. This incident exposes the harsh reality faced by many youths from the North East,” Saha said.

He added that the Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress had staged strong protests and announced that a torch rally would be organized in Agartala to demand justice and stronger safeguards against racial violence.
