Agartala, Feb 7:
In a swift and decisive operation, Tripura Police on Saturday arrested three women for their alleged involvement in the brutal assault of a six-year-old girl at Paresh Colony in West Tripura district. The incident, which reportedly occurred earlier this week, came to light after a disturbing video of the torture surfaced on social media and went viral, triggering widespread outrage across the state.

According to police officials, a case has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act, 2023, along with Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused allegedly tied the minor’s hands and legs and subjected her to severe physical torture, suspecting her of stealing Rs 20 from a neighbour’s house.

The arrested women have been identified as Dipali Banik (41), Kajali Sarkar (50), and Manti Biswas (35). Police produced them before a local court in Agartala and sought their police remand for further interrogation.

Officials noted that the child had been living in vulnerable circumstances. Her mother had reportedly eloped with another man some time ago, leaving the girl in the care of her father, a daily wage labourer, which further compounded her vulnerability.

Taking serious cognisance of the incident, the Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights (TCPCR) filed a formal complaint at the concerned police station, demanding stringent legal action against those responsible for the heinous act.

Senior police officials said the accused are currently being interrogated and that further investigation is underway to ascertain all aspects of the crime. Authorities assured that strict action would be taken in accordance with the law.

A police spokesperson reiterated that Tripura Police maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against children and vulnerable groups and remains committed to ensuring their safety, dignity, and protection.
