Agartala, February 8:
The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on Sunday held an important meeting at the state party headquarters in Agartala as part of its ongoing MGNREGA Bachao Abhiyan (Save MGNREGA Campaign). The meeting was chaired by TPCC president Ashish Kumar Saha and attended by Congress MLAs, senior party leaders, and key office-bearers.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Saha announced that the TPCC will organize a Raj Bhavan march on February 16, during which a memorandum will be submitted to the Governor, demanding urgent steps to protect and strengthen the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). He said the campaign in Tripura is part of the All India Congress Committee’s 45-day nationwide agitation to save MGNREGA, which commenced on January 10.

“The Tripura Pradesh Congress has been actively participating in this nationwide struggle by organizing protest programmes and awareness campaigns across the state,” Saha stated. He informed that on February 6, district-level programmes were successfully conducted throughout Tripura, with mass deputations submitted to district magistrates in almost all districts, except West Tripura.

To ensure smooth coordination and effective implementation of the campaign, Saha said a state-level coordination committee had already been constituted. Sunday’s meeting, he added, was convened to review the progress of the movement and to finalize preparations for the proposed Raj Bhavan march.

Emphasizing the importance of MGNREGA, the TPCC president described the scheme as a lifeline for rural workers, providing employment security and livelihood support to thousands of families. “Supporters from across the state will join the February 16 programme. We will continue our struggle to ensure the survival and proper implementation of MGNREGA,” he asserted.

Senior Congress leaders present at the meeting echoed similar concerns, alleging neglect and weakening of the scheme. They said the campaign aims to mobilize public support, highlight the challenges faced by rural workers, and press for the safeguarding of employment opportunities guaranteed under MGNREGA.
