A political controversy has erupted in Tripura following a protest staged outside the residence of a newspaper editor in the Town Bardowali constituency, represented by Chief Minister Manik Saha. The demonstration took place on Saturday morning near Bardowali Milan Sangha, where supporters led by Surjyamaninagar MLA Ram Prasad Paul gathered in front of the home of Shanita Debroy, editor of the state daily Ajker Fariyad.
Carrying party flags, the protesters assembled outside the editor’s residence and continued their demonstration until late morning. The incident has raised serious questions within political and media circles about the appropriateness of organizing a protest at a journalist’s private home. Critics argue that if there were grievances against the publication or its editor, the demonstration could have been held at a neutral public venue instead of targeting a personal residence.
During the protest, demonstrators reportedly displayed photographs of Shanita Debroy on the street and marked them with red cross signs, further intensifying the controversy. Observers say such actions could be perceived as intimidation and may have implications for press freedom in the state.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Ram Prasad Paul made a strong statement, declaring that if he took to the streets, no “mukhia” in the state would be able to protect the editor. His remarks have fueled speculation and debate across political circles, with opposition voices questioning the tone and intent behind the comments.
Following the incident, a delegation representing newspaper owners met with Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar, demanding a fair and impartial investigation. The DGP has since directed authorities to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter.
The episode has sparked a broader discussion about political dissent, accountability, and the safety of journalists in Tripura.
