Agartala is set to witness a landmark event this Friday as Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurates the Joint Regional Official Language Conference at the Hapania International Fair Ground. The large-scale gathering will bring together more than 3,000 officials and representatives from the Eastern, Northeastern, and Northern regions, making it one of the most significant language policy events ever hosted in Tripura.

Organized by the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the conference aims to strengthen the implementation of India’s Official Language Policy and promote the progressive use of Hindi in government functioning. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to enhance administrative efficiency while respecting India’s multilingual character.

Addressing a press conference at Sonar Tori State Guest House, Department Secretary Anshuli Arya highlighted that Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, holds constitutional status as the Union’s official language. She noted that since 1975, the department has been working to expand its effective use across government offices. Arya added that four regional conferences are conducted annually, and this event marks the second joint regional meet of the 2025–26 financial year. Such platforms enable officers to exchange best practices and strengthen inter-regional coordination.

The conference will also see the release of special publications, including the North-East Special Issue of Rajbhasha Bharati, along with books exploring the relationship between Hindi and other Indian languages. Eighty awards, including the prestigious “Narakas Rajbhasha Samman,” will be presented to institutions for excellence in implementing the language policy.

Senior state officials expressed confidence that hosting the conference will enhance Tripura’s cultural and administrative prominence while reinforcing national linguistic integration.
