Agartala — Acting on a specific tip-off, Jatrapur police on Friday seized a large consignment of dry ganja weighing 138 kilograms and arrested one person in connection with the case. The driver and co-driver of the vehicle, however, managed to escape from the spot.

According to police sources, information was received around 1 p.m. that a vehicle carrying ganja from Barakhola was proceeding towards the main road via Rangamura. Acting swiftly on the input, a police team led by Officer-in-Charge Sitikanta Bardhan set up an ambush at a strategic point along the route to intercept the suspected vehicle.

When the vehicle approached the identified location, police signalled it to stop. Sensing trouble, the driver and his associate abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Police personnel chased them but were unable to apprehend the duo immediately. However, one individual present in the vehicle was caught on the spot.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of four plastic drums containing a total of 138 kilograms of dry ganja. The contraband was seized in the presence of witnesses following due legal procedures.

The vehicle, bearing registration number TR01D-3432, has been impounded as part of the investigation. Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against the arrested accused.

Efforts are currently underway to identify and trace the absconding driver and co-driver. Police said further investigation is in progress to ascertain the source and intended destination of the seized contraband, and to determine whether a larger network is involved in the smuggling operation.
