Dharmanagar, Feb 25: Seventy-two days after the tragic suicide of delivery worker Prasenjit Sarkar, police have submitted a charge sheet against five accused persons, and the case has been transferred to the District and Sessions Court, North Tripura. The transfer was made after the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate took cognisance of the material facts placed before it.

Advocate Debdas Bakshi, representing the victim’s family, informed media persons on Wednesday that the trial will commence once charges are formally framed in the District and Sessions Court. “The police have sought a custody trial following reports of threats and inducements made to witnesses,” Bakshi said.

Speaking after the hearing in Dharmanagar, Bakshi stated that all five accused have remained in judicial custody for the past 72 days. “Prima facie, it has been established before the court that this is a case of abetment to suicide under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The prosecution is prepared to proceed once the required legal formalities are completed,” he said.

Bakshi also highlighted that bail applications filed by the accused had been rejected multiple times—around 13 to 14 times—by the court. He further claimed that at least one witness has lodged a police complaint alleging threats and intimidation for agreeing to testify in the case.

The counsel lauded socially conscious citizens and social media users in Dharmanagar for supporting the victim’s family and keeping the demand for justice alive. He expressed confidence that the prosecution would present its case firmly during the upcoming trial proceedings in the Sessions Court.
