Agartala, March 21: Panic gripped the Netajinagar area of Bishalgarh in Tripura after unidentified assailants allegedly opened fire inside a residence late Friday night, shortly after issuing extortion threats on social media and over the phone.

According to reports, contractor Anup Saha, also known as Madhu, had earlier received a call demanding an extortion amount of ₹50 lakh. After he refused to comply, armed attackers reportedly stormed his house and fired multiple rounds. The shocking incident occurred barely 300 metres from Bishalgarh Police Station, raising serious concerns about law and order in the area.

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the firing. However, the incident has left the family and local residents deeply shaken.

Family members have alleged that the prime accused is a notorious criminal identified as Ranbir, who, along with his associates, is believed to be behind the attack. They claimed that the accused has a history of involvement in multiple criminal cases and is currently absconding.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants arrived at the scene in a motorised rickshaw. The entire sequence of events was reportedly captured on CCTV cameras installed in the locality, which could play a crucial role in the investigation.

The brazen attack has triggered anger among residents, who alleged that criminal activities in Bishalgarh have been on the rise in recent times. Locals claimed that despite repeated allegations against the accused in cases of theft, robbery, and even bomb-related incidents, no effective action has been taken so far.

Serious questions are also being raised about the possible involvement of influential individuals. Some residents suggested that such a daring act, carried out so close to a police station, may not have been possible without powerful backing.

The incident has left the locality in a state of fear and uncertainty, with many questioning the effectiveness of law enforcement and whether criminals are operating under protection.

Police officials confirmed that an investigation has been initiated. CCTV footage from the area is being examined, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those involved in the attack.
