Agartala, March 26: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), West Tripura, organized a one-day training programme on Shelter House Management at Nazrul Kalakshetra on Thursday.

The training programme was aimed at enhancing preparedness and strengthening the capacity of officials responsible for managing relief shelters during natural disasters. Participants included Shelter House In-Charges, Tehsildars, Ward Secretaries, and Panchayat Secretaries from various parts of the district.

The workshop assumed significance in view of the approaching monsoon season, which often brings flooding to several low-lying areas in and around Agartala. Officials highlighted that shelter houses play a crucial role as safe havens during emergencies, especially for vulnerable communities.

Special focus was given to regions along the Haora River basin, where annual flooding forces many families, including indigenous communities, to temporarily relocate to designated shelters. The training emphasized the need for timely evacuation, proper resource management, and maintaining basic amenities in shelter homes.

During the sessions, experts and officials discussed key aspects of effective shelter management, including coordination among departments, crowd management, sanitation, food distribution, and ensuring the safety and dignity of displaced persons. Practical insights were also shared on handling emergency situations and addressing challenges that may arise during disaster response.

The programme underscored the importance of proactive planning and inter-departmental coordination to minimize risks and enhance disaster resilience. Officials stressed that well-prepared shelter management systems can significantly reduce the impact of natural disasters on vulnerable populations.

The initiative reflects DDMA’s continued efforts to build a responsive and efficient disaster management framework in West Tripura, ensuring better protection for communities at risk.
