Dharmanagar, March 31:
In a significant move to promote inclusive participation in the electoral process, the special ‘Vote from Home’ facility for persons with disabilities (PwD) and voters aged above 85 years commenced on Tuesday in the 56-Dharmanagar Assembly constituency by-election in Tripura.
Implemented as per guidelines of the Election Commission of India, the initiative allows eligible voters to cast their ballots from the comfort of their homes. Polling teams, equipped with ballot boxes and necessary election materials, began visiting households from Tuesday morning under tight security arrangements. The process will continue over three days, concluding on April 2.
According to official figures, a total of 185 voters are set to benefit from this सुविधा, including 116 senior citizens above the age of 85 and 69 PwD voters. These individuals had opted for the home voting facility in advance, ensuring their inclusion despite mobility or health constraints.
Election officials are conducting the voting process inside residences while strictly maintaining the secrecy of ballots, a fundamental principle of free and fair elections. To ensure transparency and accountability, the entire process is being videographed. Additionally, representatives of various political parties are allowed to be present during the exercise, further reinforcing confidence in the system.
Authorities have expressed confidence in completing the collection of all 185 votes within the stipulated three-day schedule. Officials on the ground are working in a coordinated manner to ensure smooth execution without any disruptions.
Beneficiaries have welcomed the initiative, stating that it has enabled them to exercise their democratic right without the physical strain of visiting polling stations. Many elderly voters and PwD individuals described the experience as convenient and empowering.
The ‘Vote from Home’ facility reflects the Election Commission’s broader commitment to strengthening participatory democracy. By prioritising accessibility and inclusivity, the initiative ensures that no eligible voter is left behind, reinforcing the spirit of elections as a true “festival of democracy.”
