Agartala, April 9: In a major breakthrough against narcotics trafficking, police in Jatrapur seized 32 kilograms of dry cannabis and arrested a suspected trafficker during a swift and well-coordinated operation led by the station’s newly appointed Officer-in-Charge, Partha Nath Bhowmik.

The operation was carried out on Wednesday evening, barely a day after Bhowmik took charge of Jatrapur Police Station, signaling a strong start to intensified anti-drug enforcement in the region. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a joint team of police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel laid an ambush near the Kalibari area under Kathalia Gram Panchayat, along the Kathalia–Thalibari road.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., the team intercepted a black Maruti Baleno car bearing registration number TR01-AS-7809. Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicle, officers recovered two sacks filled with dry cannabis, weighing a total of 32 kilograms. The contraband was immediately seized as evidence.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 25-year-old Rubel Hossain from Banshpukur Panchayat, was apprehended on the spot. According to police sources, the seized cannabis was intended for cross-border smuggling, indicating the involvement of a larger trafficking network operating in the region.

A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and the accused has been produced before the court. Police have sought remand to facilitate further interrogation and to uncover additional links in the trafficking chain.

Speaking on the development, Officer-in-Charge Partha Nath Bhowmik stated that the operation reflects the department’s renewed focus on cracking down on drug-related crimes, particularly in sensitive border areas. He reaffirmed the commitment of Jatrapur Police to intensify surveillance and take strict action against those involved in illegal narcotics trade.

The successful seizure underscores the growing vigilance of law enforcement agencies and marks a significant step in curbing drug trafficking activities in the region.
