Agartala, May 11: Opposition parties CPI(M) and Congress on Monday demanded a high-level impartial investigation into the mysterious death of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader Rahul Kishore Roy in Tripura’s North district, an incident that has triggered widespread outrage and political tension in the state.
Rahul Kishore Roy, 38, was found dead in the bathroom of his residence at Dharmanagar on May 5. He was the President of BJP Yuva Morcha’s Dharmanagar Mandal unit and an elected councillor of the Dharmanagar Municipal Council. Police suspect the BJP youth leader died by suicide, although no arrests have been made so far.
Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury called for an impartial and high-level inquiry to uncover the circumstances surrounding Roy’s death and ensure strict action against those responsible. Chaudhury, who is also CPI(M)’s Tripura state Secretary and Politburo member, urged the government to extend moral, economic, and social support to Roy’s pregnant wife.
North Tripura District Congress President Digbijoy Chakraborty alleged that Roy became a victim of internal conflict within the BJP. He claimed the BJYM leader was subjected to harassment and attacks by a section of ruling party workers, which allegedly pushed him to take the extreme step.
Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, assured a fair and impartial investigation into the matter. In a social media statement, the Chief Minister expressed grief over Roy’s death and said allegations made by the victim’s wife would be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the law.
The incident occurred a day after BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborty won the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election on May 4, leading to speculation and unrest in the region. Following the death, protests erupted across Dharmanagar, with supporters and residents demanding immediate action against those allegedly involved.
In her police complaint, Roy’s wife accused a group of “miscreants” linked to a section of BJP leaders of assaulting her family on May 4. She further alleged that humiliation caused by the incident drove her husband to die by suicide. Police said all possible angles, including political motives, are being investigated.
