Tensions surrounding the formation of a mosque committee in Churaibari’s Ward No. 4 escalated into violence on Monday afternoon, leaving one person critically injured and triggering police intervention.
According to reports, a heated argument between two rival factions over the constitution of the mosque committee spiraled out of control around 3 p.m. near Churaibari market. What began as a verbal confrontation soon turned into a physical assault in full public view. The victim, identified as Atiqur Rahman, was allegedly attacked with iron rods by a group of four individuals. Sources claimed that the assailants initially attempted to target his brother, Ataur Rahman, who managed to escape, after which Atiqur was assaulted.
Eyewitnesses stated that the attackers repeatedly struck Atiqur in the street until local residents intervened. The intervention of bystanders reportedly forced the accused to flee the scene, preventing further harm.
The injured man was immediately taken to Churaibari Police Station and later shifted to Kadamtala Social Hospital for medical attention. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, doctors subsequently referred him to Silchar for advanced treatment.
A written complaint was lodged the following day at Churaibari Police Station against four accused persons — Selim Uddin, Abdul Jalil, Komrul Hossain, and Buru Mia — all residents of North Fulbari village under Churaibari jurisdiction.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident. Officials stated that necessary legal steps are being taken and that those found guilty will face appropriate action.
The incident has created tension in the locality, with reports of counter-complaints from both sides. Meanwhile, the victim’s family has appealed to the administration and the media for justice and swift action to restore peace in the area.
