Kailashahar, June 14: Tension prevailed along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Unakoti district after a Bangladeshi youth was allegedly shot dead by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel during an attempted cross-border smuggling operation on Friday evening.

According to preliminary reports, a group of Bangladeshi nationals reportedly crossed into Indian territory near the Latiapura border under the Gournagar block of Kailashahar subdivision. BSF personnel on patrol intercepted the group, leading to a confrontation. During the incident, BSF personnel opened fire, resulting in the death of one Bangladeshi national.

The deceased has been identified as Mujibur Rahman Mujib (26), son of Ajub Ali and a resident of Sharifpur Union under Kulaura Upazila in Moulvibazar district of Bangladesh. He reportedly died on the spot.

Sources further claimed that at least three other individuals sustained bullet injuries during the firing and managed to flee back across the border into Bangladesh. However, their identities and medical conditions have not yet been officially confirmed.

The body of the deceased was recovered by Indian authorities and transported to Bhagabannagar Hospital in Kailashahar for post-mortem examination. Officials indicated that the body may be handed over to Bangladeshi authorities following legal formalities and a flag meeting between the BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Local representatives in Bangladesh have acknowledged the incident and confirmed the death of Mujibur Rahman. The BGB’s Srimangal Battalion also stated that it heard gunfire near the border and is currently in contact with the BSF to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The BSF has maintained that the firing occurred while attempting to prevent illegal intrusion and cross-border smuggling activities.

Following the incident, security has been significantly strengthened in the border region. BSF personnel, local police, and administrative officials have launched a detailed investigation, while authorities on both sides of the border continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any escalation.
