Agartala, June 6: In a significant step toward modernizing the state’s power infrastructure, Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Friday announced plans to introduce advanced technology for detecting illegal “hook line” connections and ensure uninterrupted power supply during adverse weather conditions. The minister made the announcement while inaugurating a new 33 KV substation in the Sekerkote area under Kamalasagar assembly constituency.

Drawing inspiration from Odisha’s robust power supply system during cyclonic storms, Nath said Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) would soon study and replicate Odisha’s successful model. “Odisha regularly faces cyclones, yet manages to maintain uninterrupted power supply. We plan to follow their example to enhance Tripura’s power resilience during storms and heavy rainfall,” said Nath.

He emphasized the need for citizens to adopt clean energy alternatives, pointing out the growing challenges in gas-based power generation. “Tripura primarily relies on gas-based plants, but a scarcity of gas and rising prices have impacted production. Solar energy is the sustainable solution. We have increased our solar power generation from 3 MW to 27 MW, and aim to expand it further,” he added.

Addressing the issue of power theft, the minister assured that the government would intensify efforts to curb pilferage. He stressed the role of public awareness and community responsibility in combating electricity theft. “Hook lines not only cause financial losses but also affect the power bills of honest consumers. Advanced detection technology will soon be deployed, and we urge citizens to report such cases,” he said.

The newly inaugurated substation is expected to improve local power distribution and reduce outages in the region. The minister’s statements reflect the government’s proactive approach to creating a more reliable and sustainable energy infrastructure in Tripura.
