Agartala, June 15:
In a major boost to eco-tourism, Tripura is set to introduce its first elephant safari in the forested regions of Mungiakami, Teliamura. The safari will cover a 1.5-kilometer stretch and will use trained tuskers from the Mungiakami elephant camp to take tourists on guided rides through the lush greenery of the area.

According to a senior official from the forest department, preparations are already underway, and a detailed project proposal has been submitted to the forest headquarters for final approval. “We are keen to start the elephant safari tours for tourists as soon as possible,” the official told Tripura Times.

The forest department anticipates a surge in tourist footfall following the launch of the safari. Khowai district, where Mungiakami is located, boasts rich biodiversity and is already home to several eco-tourism attractions. Notably, a vulture viewpoint has been established in the Kalyanpur area, and several eco-parks across the district attract thousands of nature lovers and picnic-goers year-round.

“If all goes as planned, we aim to roll out the safari service by this winter season,” the official added. Winter months typically see a high influx of visitors to Teliamura’s eco-park, often arriving in large picnic groups. The forest department believes that introducing the elephant safari during this time could significantly boost tourism revenue and promote wildlife awareness.

Officials also hope the initiative will create new livelihood opportunities for locals and highlight Tripura’s potential as a nature tourism destination. With eco-tourism gaining popularity nationwide, the state’s first elephant safari could mark a new chapter in sustainable tourism, blending conservation with community engagement and adventure.
