Agartala, June 26: To mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education on Tuesday organized an awareness programme today at Agartala Town Hall. Minister Tinku Roy has inaugurated the programme and emphasised that a drug-free society is achievable through strong determination and community engagement.
In his address, Minister Roy highlighted the ongoing awareness efforts beyond such events, including street plays, awareness drives in rural areas, and campaigns through women members of self-help groups to spread the message about the harmful effects of substance abuse. He specifically stressed the need to educate and alert the youth, who are most vulnerable to addiction.
Director of the Social Welfare and Social Education Department, Tapan Kumar Das, in his speech, shared that the department had carried out a statewide awareness campaign across all districts from June 1 to June 26. Based on the successful implementation of activities during this period, South Tripura was awarded first place, followed by West Tripura and Sepahijala in second and third positions respectively.
The day also witnessed inter-school and inter-college competitions, including debates, slogan writing, and poster-making contests. Prizes were awarded to the winners during the event.
Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Deepak Majumder, Tripura Child Rights Protection Commission Chairperson Jayanti Debbarma, Secretary of the Social Welfare Department Tapas Roy, Anti-Narcotics SP Priya Madhuri Majumder, and West Tripura Additional District Magistrate Megha Jain, among others were present in the programme.
The event also saw active participation from students of various schools across the district, showcasing their support for a drug-free future.
