Agartala: July 02: Tripura is immersed in festive fervor as preparations for the revered Kharchi Puja reach their peak. The week-long festival, one of the most vibrant and culturally significant in Northeast India, will be formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday in the presence of other dignitaries at the Chaturdash Devata Temple in Old Agartala (Khayerpur).

The celebrations began with the traditional Snan Yatra, where idols of the 14 deities are taken in a grand procession to the sacred Snan Ghat for a ceremonial bath, accompanied by a guard of honour. This marks the formal commencement of the Kharchi Utsav, a festival deeply rooted in Tripura’s spiritual and cultural fabric.

A member of the organizing committee emphasized that Kharchi Puja is a symbol of devotion and unity, celebrating the state’s heritage. “Every year, this festival brings immense joy and spiritual upliftment to thousands of devotees from across Tripura and beyond,” he said.

The mela committee has rolled out a detailed plan for ensuring a smooth and safe celebration. Key focus areas include enhanced street lighting, uninterrupted electricity, and public safety—especially during the evening hours when footfall is at its highest. Facilities such as clean drinking water, mobile health units, and proper sanitation will be provided for visitors’ convenience.

This year, 700 stalls have been allotted via lottery for the fair, announced local MLA and organizing committee chairman Ratan Chakraborty. In addition, several government departments will set up exhibition stalls, adding to the cultural and informational richness of the event.

Kharchi Puja 2025 promises to be a grand celebration of Tripura’s devotion, diversity, and tradition, drawing large crowds and reaffirming the state’s spiritual identity.
