Kolkata, July 10: The Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police has uncovered key details about how two suspected ISI operatives, Mukesh Rajak and Rakesh Kumar Gupta, helped Pakistani handlers gain access to Indian mobile numbers for creating fake WhatsApp accounts.

During interrogation, the duo, currently in police custody, admitted to procuring prepaid SIM cards using multiple Indian identity documents. Once activated, these SIMs were handed over to their handlers in Pakistan, along with the OTPs needed to verify and activate WhatsApp accounts.

According to STF sources, Rajak and Gupta operated covertly under the guise of running an NGO from a rented flat in Memari, East Burdwan — a quiet locality with no major criminal history. Their activities remained low-profile, and their behavior raised no suspicion among locals.

Interestingly, the two gave conflicting accounts of their identities. They told the landlord they were English teachers, while neighbors believed they headed a social welfare NGO. Locals described them as polite but reserved, with limited interaction in the community. Occasionally, visitors would come and stay briefly at their rented accommodation, which has now become a key focus of the probe.

Rajak is a resident of Panagarh in West Burdwan, while Gupta hails from Bhawanipur in South Kolkata. Both are now believed to be part of a broader espionage network working for Pakistan’s ISI.

The STF has seized their mobile phones and is currently examining digital evidence to trace the duration and depth of their involvement. Investigators are also trying to determine the type of information shared with their Pakistani contacts and whether other individuals were involved in the racket.

Further arrests and revelations are expected as the investigation deepens.
