Agartala, August 5: To bring about a complete transformation in the country, the education system must undergo radical reform, said Tripura’s Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman on Tuesday.
He was speaking at the inauguration of a symposium titled “Five Years of National Education Policy: Implementation, Challenges, and Future Goals in Technical Institutions of Tripura” held at the auditorium of Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT), Narsingarh.
The event was jointly organized by the Tripura Institute of Technology, the Technical Education Wing, and the Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh (ABRSM). Teachers, professors, and academicians from various technical institutions across the state participated in the symposium.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Barman highlighted that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the vision of making education accessible to every section of society. “Prior to this, India’s education system was based on the British model initiated by Lord Macaulay, which did not ensure inclusive educational opportunities. The NEP marks a significant departure from that system,” he stated.
He further noted that the development of any nation is directly proportional to the education level of its people. Hence, the NEP aims to provide India-centric education in mother tongues, regional languages, and the 22 constitutionally recognized languages of the country. “Teachers and academicians must come forward and play an active role in its successful implementation,” he urged.
The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing the NEP despite various challenges. “We want to make Tripura an education hub,” he said, pointing out the importance placed on digital education under NEP through initiatives such as e-classes, MOOCs, and SWAYAM. Tripura has also received recognition for its internet connectivity, with every village panchayat and VC area now connected with Wi-Fi, he added.
